I’m James Self, the Manager for Thornbury’s Community team.

I moved to Thornbury in November 2017, having been involved with managing staff banks for large NHS Trusts in central London. I am now responsible for the team that provide nurses and carers for community clients in England and Wales.

The move to Thornbury for me coincided with moving my family to the South West and has been a fantastic decision.

In October 2018 I also became our CQC (Care Quality Commission) Registered Manager and work with a great group of people who are passionate about constantly improving our service.

1. What do you enjoy most about working for Thornbury?

I love the way our service makes a real impact on the lives of our service users and clients. Some of the testimonials we receive make any hard work we do in the background worthwhile.

2. What makes Thornbury Nursing stand out compared to other agencies?

Our responsiveness. When I first joined TNS I was amazed that we were able to provide nurses all over the country... now! I had thought it was a myth. Now it’s par for the course that we can get nurses where they’re most needed when no one else can.

3. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

‘Easy choices, hard life. Hard choices, easy life.’ (I think it is a quote from Jerzy Gregorek.) The advice struck me as a great way of articulating the need to tackle challenges head on if you’re going to do something exceptional.
